Ingredients

Main
  • 2 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 3 tablespoons milk or cream divided
  • 1 tablespoon butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Equipment

  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Whisk or fork
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Sifter or fine-mesh strainer (optional but recommended)
  • Pastry brush or small spoon for application
  • Small saucepan if warming the glaze

Method

  1. Pass your powdered sugar through a fine-mesh sifter into a medium mixing bowl.
  2. Pour the melted butter into the bowl along with 2 tablespoons of milk and the vanilla extract.
  3. Whisk vigorously for about 30 seconds until no lumps remain and the mixture becomes pale and smooth.
  4. Add the remaining tablespoon of milk one teaspoon at a time while whisking, stopping when you reach your desired consistency.
  5. Dip a clean spoon into the glaze and taste it, then adjust the vanilla or salt to your preference.
  6. Allow the glaze to sit for 1 minute so any remaining air bubbles rise to the surface.
  7. Use a pastry brush or the back of a spoon to apply the glaze to your cooled baked good in smooth, even strokes.
  8. Let the glaze harden at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes before serving or stacking.

Notes

A glossy glaze elevates simple baked goods and roasted meats into something special enough for entertaining.
