Main
  • 2 slices bread sourdough, whole wheat, or your preference
  • 3 to 4 ounces sliced turkey breast
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise or your preferred spread
  • 1 slice cheese cheddar, Swiss, or provolone
  • 2 to 3 leaves fresh lettuce
  • 2 slices ripe tomato
  • 2 to 3 thin slices red onion
  • 1 teaspoon mustard optional, yellow or Dijon
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 to 2 slices bacon optional, for added richness

Equipment

  • Cutting board
  • Serrated bread knife
  • Toaster or toaster oven
  • Spreading knife or butter knife
  • Plate

Method

  1. Toast both slices of bread in a toaster until light golden brown, about 2 minutes.
  2. While the bread is still warm, spread mayonnaise on one slice.
  3. Spread mustard on the second slice if using.
  4. Layer turkey slices on the mayonnaise side.
  5. Place cheese slice on top of the turkey.
  6. Add lettuce, followed by tomato slices, and then red onion on top of the cheese.
  7. If using bacon, crumble or tear it and scatter over the vegetables.
  8. Season with salt and pepper, then cap with the mustard-spread bread slice.
  9. Cut the sandwich diagonally with a serrated knife.

Notes

For best quality, add fresh vegetables just before eating to maintain crispness.
