Ingredients

Main
  • 1.5 ounces 45 ml vodka
  • 3 ounces 90 ml Concord grape juice
  • 3 ounces 90 ml ginger ale
  • 0.5 ounce 15 ml fresh lime juice
  • Ice cubes to fill the glass
  • 1 lime wedge for garnish
  • Fresh grapes optional, for garnish

Equipment

  • Highball glass or Collins glass
  • Jigger or measuring tool
  • Bar spoon or long spoon for stirring
  • Ice scoop or tongs
  • Citrus juicer
  • Knife and cutting board

Method

  1. Place your highball glass in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes before mixing to chill it.
  2. Roll your lime on the counter with firm pressure to release the juices inside. Cut it in half and squeeze out half an ounce of fresh juice, straining out any seeds.
  3. Remove your chilled glass and fill it generously with ice cubes.
  4. Measure 1.5 ounces of vodka using a jigger and pour it directly over the ice.
  5. Add 3 ounces of Concord grape juice to the glass.
  6. Pour your half ounce of fresh lime juice into the mix.
  7. Slowly pour 3 ounces of ginger ale down the side of the glass to preserve the carbonation.
  8. Use a bar spoon to give the drink two or three gentle stirs. Avoid over stirring to preserve the bubbles.
  9. Add a lime wedge to the rim or drop it into the glass. Optionally, thread a few fresh grapes onto a cocktail pick for garnish and serve immediately.

Notes

For the most refreshing Transfusion, use grape juice straight from the refrigerator and ginger ale right after opening. Use quality vodka since cheap options can leave a harsh aftertaste. If batching for a party, mix vodka, grape juice, and lime juice in a pitcher up to a day ahead, then add ginger ale and ice to individual glasses right before serving.
