Method
- Chill a rocks glass by filling it with ice or running cold water around the inside; set aside.
- Pour 0.5 ounce pure maple syrup into a mixing glass.
- Add 2 to 3 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters to the maple syrup.
- Add about 0.5 ounce water to help dissolve the syrup and bitters, then stir for 15–20 seconds until uniform.
- Measure and add 2 ounces rye whiskey to the mixing glass.
- Fill the mixing glass three-quarters full with large ice cubes and stir gently for 30 seconds to chill and dilute.
- Express oils from a 1×2-inch orange peel over the chilled rocks glass by twisting the peel skin-side out over the glass.
- Discard the ice in the rocks glass, add a fresh large ice cube, and strain the cocktail into the glass.
- Drop the expressed orange peel into the drink as garnish and serve immediately.
Notes
For minimal dilution, use a single large ice cube and avoid over-stirring.
