Hanky Panky Cocktail

A bold, herbaceous classic cocktail combining rye whiskey, sweet vermouth and Fernet-Branca, stirred and served up with a bright lemon twist.

Ingredients
  

Cocktail
  • 1.5 ounces rye whiskey
  • 1.5 ounces sweet vermouth
  • 0.25 ounces Fernet-Branca
  • Ice cubes for stirring
  • 1 lemon twist for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail jigger
  • Bar spoon
  • Hawthorne strainer
  • Coupe glass
  • Citrus peeler

Method
 

  1. Place a coupe glass in the freezer for at least 2 minutes to chill.
  2. Fill a mixing glass three-quarters full with large ice cubes.
  3. Measure 1.5 ounces rye whiskey with a jigger and pour into the mixing glass.
  4. Add 1.5 ounces sweet vermouth to the mixing glass.
  5. Measure 0.25 ounces (about 2 bar spoons) Fernet-Branca and add to the glass.
  6. Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 30 seconds until well-chilled and properly diluted.
  7. Using a Hawthorne strainer, strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe glass.
  8. Express the oils of a lemon twist over the surface, then drop the twist into the drink or rest it on the rim. Serve immediately.
