Ingredients

Main
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound bulk Italian sausage
  • 1 pound sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package party rye bread about 48 slices

Equipment

  • Large skillet or frying pan
  • Colander or fine mesh strainer
  • Cutting board and sharp knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon for stirring
  • Baking sheets or sheet pans
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Oven with broiler capability
  • Paper towels for draining

Method

  1. Add the ground beef and sausage to a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking the meat apart as it cooks. Stir frequently until no pink remains, about 8 to 10 minutes.
  2. Pour the cooked meat into a colander to drain all the rendered fat and grease thoroughly.
  3. Transfer the drained meat back to the skillet or into a clean mixing bowl.
  4. Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to the warm meat, mixing until evenly distributed.
  5. Add the shredded sharp cheddar cheese to the warm meat mixture and stir until all the cheese melts and coats the meat evenly.
  6. Arrange the party rye bread slices on baking sheets in a single layer.
  7. Spoon approximately one teaspoon of the meat and cheese mixture onto each slice of rye bread.
  8. Place the baking sheets under the broiler on high heat for 2 to 3 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.

Notes

Hanky Panky is best served hot from the broiler for maximum impact.
