Method
- Gather and measure out all your spices before you start heating anything to prevent burning while searching for ingredients.
- Pour both cups of milk into a small saucepan and place it over medium-low heat. Warm the milk but do not let it boil.
- Whisk in the ground turmeric as the milk begins to warm, adding it early to allow the spice to fully incorporate.
- Add the cinnamon, ginger, and a pinch of black pepper. Whisk continuously for about 30 seconds to blend everything evenly.
- Drop in the coconut oil and stir until it melts completely into the milk.
- Let the golden milk simmer on low heat for 3 to 4 minutes, whisking occasionally to allow the flavors to meld together.
- Remove the pan from heat and stir in maple syrup or honey, starting with one tablespoon and adding more to taste.
- If using vanilla extract, add it now while the milk is off the heat.
- For an extra smooth drink, pour the golden milk through a fine mesh strainer to catch any ginger fibers or spice clumps (optional).
- Divide between two mugs and serve warm. Dust with a light sprinkle of cinnamon on top if desired.
Notes
Make a big batch of the dry spice mixture and store it in a jar for quick golden milk anytime. Always use black pepper as it increases turmeric absorption by up to 2000 percent. Store leftover golden milk in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheat gently while whisking.
