Ingredients

Main
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 2 to 3 cups vegetable oil for frying

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk or fork
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Deep heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven
  • Candy or deep-fry thermometer
  • Slotted spoon or spider strainer
  • Paper towels
  • Wire rack or plate lined with paper towels

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Gradually pour the warm water into the dry ingredients while stirring with a fork or your hands.
  3. Mix until a shaggy dough forms, then knead gently for about 2 minutes until it comes together into a soft, smooth ball.
  4. Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 10 minutes at room temperature.
  5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
  6. Roll each piece gently into a ball, then flatten it with your palms into a disk roughly 1/4 inch thick and 4 inches in diameter.
  7. Pour oil into a deep pot to a depth of about 2 inches and heat to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  8. Carefully place one dough disk into the hot oil; fry for 1 to 2 minutes until the bottom turns golden brown.
  9. Flip gently with a slotted spoon or spider strainer and fry the second side for another 1 to 2 minutes.
  10. Transfer the fried bread to a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  11. Repeat the frying process with the remaining dough pieces.
  12. Serve the fry bread warm with your choice of toppings.

Notes
