Ingredients

Main
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon water
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract optional but recommended

Equipment

  • Small saucepan or skillet
  • Wooden spoon or heat-resistant spatula
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat
  • Cookie cutters or small molds
  • Toothpick or small knife
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. Measure out 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar into a small saucepan or skillet.
  2. Place the pan over medium heat without stirring and let the sugar sit for about 1 minute.
  3. Once the edges start to melt and turn golden, stir constantly with a wooden spoon.
  4. When the sugar turns a light amber color (about 2 to 3 minutes), quickly add the water and vanilla extract.
  5. Remove the pan from heat immediately after mixing in the water and vanilla.
  6. Quickly sprinkle the baking soda into the hot mixture and stir vigorously.
  7. Pour the foamy mixture onto a piece of parchment paper before it cools and hardens.
  8. If using cookie cutters, press them into the warm mixture immediately and gently wiggle them free after about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
