Ingredients

Main
  • 1 bagel any flavor (plain, everything, whole wheat, etc.)
  • 1/2 cup cottage cheese full-fat preferred
  • 1 tablespoon butter or cream cheese optional for toasting
  • Pinch of salt to taste
  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Fresh toppings of choice e.g., sliced tomatoes, cucumber, berries, fresh herbs

Equipment

  • Toaster or toaster oven
  • Serrated knife
  • Cutting board
  • Butter knife or small spreading knife
  • Small bowl (optional)

Method

  1. Slice the bagel in half horizontally using a serrated knife, working carefully on a cutting board.
  2. Place both halves cut-side up in a toaster or toaster oven set to medium heat and toast for 2–3 minutes until warm and lightly crisp.
  3. Optional: While the bagel is still hot, spread 1 tablespoon butter or cream cheese evenly over the cut sides for extra richness.
  4. Spoon 1/4 cup cottage cheese onto each toasted bagel half, spreading gently to cover the surface.
  5. Season the cottage cheese with a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  6. Add desired toppings such as sliced tomatoes, cucumber, fresh herbs, berries, or seeds, keeping to 2–3 items for best flavor balance.
  7. Serve immediately while the bagel is warm and the cottage cheese is cool and creamy.

Notes

Drain cottage cheese briefly in a fine-mesh strainer if very wet to prevent a soggy bagel. Assemble just before eating for the best texture.
