Ingredients

Coconut Margarita
  • 1 1/2 ounces silver tequila
  • 1 ounce coconut rum
  • 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce orange liqueur Cointreau or triple sec
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup or coconut syrup
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Ice cubes for shaking
  • Lime wheel for garnish
  • Toasted coconut flakes for rimming (optional)

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger or shot glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Margarita glass or rocks glass
  • Strainer
  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Shallow dish

Method

  1. Fill a margarita glass with ice to chill while you prepare the drink.
  2. Pour sea salt (or toasted coconut flakes) into a shallow dish. Rub a lime wheel around the rim of the glass, then dip the rim into the salt or coconut to coat evenly.
  3. Discard the ice from the glass and set the prepared glass aside.
  4. Using a jigger, add 1 1/2 ounces silver tequila and 1 ounce coconut rum to a cocktail shaker.
  5. Add 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice and 1/2 ounce orange liqueur to the shaker.
  6. Pour in 1/2 ounce simple syrup (or coconut syrup) and a small pinch of sea salt.
  7. Fill the shaker three-quarters full with ice cubes, seal, and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the shaker is frosty.
  8. Strain the margarita into the prepared glass filled with fresh ice, taking care not to disturb the rim.
  9. Garnish with a lime wheel and serve immediately.

Notes

Adjust sweetness or tartness to taste by adding a splash more simple syrup or lime juice before shaking. For a spicy variation, add a slice of jalapeño to the shaker.
