Method
- Prepare your workspace by covering your table or floor with a plastic tablecloth, newspaper, or work outside if weather permits.
- Pour 2 cups of cornstarch into your large mixing bowl or plastic bin. A wider container works better than a deep narrow bowl because it gives more room for hands to explore.
- Mix your food coloring into the water before adding it to the cornstarch. This ensures even color distribution throughout the oobleck rather than streaky patches.
- Pour about half the water into the cornstarch and begin mixing with a spoon. Adding water slowly lets you control the consistency and prevents the mixture from becoming too thin.
- Ditch the spoon and get your hands in there once the initial water incorporates. Your hands mix oobleck far more effectively than any utensil.
- Add remaining water a tablespoon at a time until you achieve the perfect texture. The ideal oobleck feels solid when you squeeze it quickly but drips off your hand when you relax.
- Test your oobleck by rolling a ball between your palms rapidly, then stop and watch it melt away. Try punching the surface, poking it slowly, and letting it drip through your fingers to experience all its weird properties.
- Set out small toys, spoons, and containers for extended exploration and experimentation.
Notes
The perfect oobleck ratio is roughly 2 parts cornstarch to 1 part water, but humidity affects this. If your oobleck feels too powdery, add more water; if too runny, sprinkle in more cornstarch. Do not pour oobleck down the drain as it will clog your pipes. Let it dry out and throw it in the trash instead. Oobleck is a sensory play material, not food. While cornstarch is non-toxic, this mixture should not be consumed.
