Ingredients

Main
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract optional

Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon or silicone spatula
  • Glass jar or bottle with lid
  • Whisk

Method

  1. Combine brown sugar, water, and salt in a small saucepan and stir to dissolve slightly.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, about 2–3 minutes.
  3. Let the syrup simmer gently for 2 minutes without stirring to fully dissolve any remaining sugar crystals.
  4. Remove the pan from heat and immediately stir in the vanilla extract, if using.
  5. Allow the syrup to cool in the pan for 3–5 minutes until safe to handle.
  6. Transfer the warm syrup to a clean glass jar or bottle, then let it cool to room temperature before sealing.

Notes

Store sealed in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks. If crystals form, warm the jar for 10–15 seconds in the microwave and stir gently.
