Method
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly butter or spray a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
- In a medium bowl stir the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir just until a smooth batter forms; a few small lumps are fine.
- Spread the batter evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- In a clean bowl combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice; toss until the apples are well coated.
- Pour the apple mixture, along with any juices, evenly over the batter without stirring. Dot the top with the 2 tablespoons of butter pieces.
- Bake for 45 minutes, or until the cake layer is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the cake portion comes out clean. If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil after 30 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and let the dump cake cool for 10–15 minutes before serving warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
For a flavor twist, brown the butter used in the batter before mixing or substitute half the apples with sliced pears.
